Overcoming Sleep Difficulties: 5. No Clock Watching

There’s a very good reason why we want to throw your bedside clock in the bin. When you are trying to get to sleep and you look at the time, the only purpose this serves is to trigger your stress system. When you see the time you start having thoughts like “I’m going to be so tired tomorrow”, “I’m only going to get X hours of sleep”, “Arrrrh I’ve been lying here for X hours trying to fall asleep!”. What do thoughts like this lead to?…they lead to stress. When we are stressed our body is preparing itself for danger – i.e. to fight something off or to run away. And well…good luck trying to sleep when your body is in this state.

You don’t need to know the time…it serves no helpful purpose. So turn your clock around or throw your phone to the other side of the room.
